ASU's Williams shuts down Washington State
Right-hander Trevor Williams threw a complete-game shutout Saturday to lead the 23rd-ranked Arizona State baseball team to a 2-0 win over Washington State at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Williams (8-2) earned his team-leading eighth win. He struck out four, walked none and scattered seven hits in his second complete game of the season.
Williams has now thrown 11 2/3 scoreless innings in three career appearances against the Cougars (21-18, 7-9), and he has not walked a batter in 25 consecutive innings dating to April 6 against Oregon State. He also pitched a complete-game shutout with no walks in a 4-0 win over USC on April 14.
The Sun Devils (26-16, 11-9) scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Andrew Aplin to take a 1-0 lead. Drew Stankiewicz led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third on a passed ball and a groundout before Aplin brought him around with the team’s second hit of the day.
Aplin stole home in the eighth inning to extend ASU’s lead to 2-0. He reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout.
Washington State starter Tanner Chleborad took his first loss of the season, falling to 3-1, after allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits in 7 1/3 innings.
