ASU's Pinnick finishes third in NCAA heptathlon

EUGENE, Ore. – Arizona State senior Keia Pinnick took third place in the heptathlon at the NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene, Ore., on Friday.

Pinnick scored a career-best 5,984 points over the two-day event at Hayward Field, which was 183 points better than her previous career-best entering the week. She increased her hold on the third-best score in school history in the events behind former NCAA champions Jacquelyn Johnson and Gea Johnson.

The senior opened the event with a leap of 6.07m (19-11.00), which was the fifth-best jump of the opening competition.

From there, Pinnick went to nearly better her previous career best in the javelin with a best throw on the day of 38.13m (125-01) and found herself in sixth place in the overall standings heading into the final event of the day.

There, Pinnick shined on national television, as she won the 800-meter run in 2:10.89 to jump from sixth to third in her final competition as a Sun Devil.

Pinnick will leave ASU as a three-time All-American and one of the school's most accomplished all-around athletes in any sport.  

She holds top-10 marks in ASU history in the 100-meter hurdles, the 400-meter hurdles, the indoor 60-meter dash, the indoor 60-meter hurdles, the indoor 200-meter dash, the indoor 400-meter dash, the indoor 800-meter run and the indoor long jump in addition to the second-best mark in the pentathlon and third-best score in the heptathlon.  She has also been a part of five relay teams that have set indoor and outdoor top-10 marks in school history.

The ASU women are third in the overall standings heading into the final day of competition with 26 points. Kansas leads with 48 points while Oregon is in second with 33 points.

The Sun Devils will conclude the 2013 season withShelby Houlihan taking part in the 1,500-meter final and Anna Jelmini competing in the shot put in search of her second national title of the outdoor championships.
