Arizona second baseman Trent Gilbert was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on Monday. Gilbert led UA to a three-game sweep of Utah last week at Hi Corbett Field.
A sophomore, Gilbert batted .385 (5 for 13) with three runs scored and six runs batted in against the Utes, accounting for nine of the Wildcats' 21 runs scored in the series. On Friday, Gilbert set a career high with five runs batted in to go with a pair of doubles. On Saturday, Gilbert provided a key run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning, plating the eventual game-winning run in a 2-1 victory.
On the season, Gilbert is hitting .348 and leads all Pac-12 players in runs batted in (35) and triples (5). The Torrance, Calif., native also ranks in the top five for runs scored (24) and base hits (39). Gilbert has as many walks (11) as strikeouts (11) and has been hit by a pitch four times to give him a .419 on-base percentage. Defensively, Gilbert has 88 assists, which is tied for second in the conference.
The weekly accolade is the first such career honor for Gilbert and the first for Arizona this season. Junior pitcher James Farris was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17.
