Arizona downs Utah in Pac-12 baseball opener
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona opened its Pac-12 Conference baseball schedule with a 10-5 victory over Utah on Friday evening at Hi Corbett Field, extending the club's winning streak to seven consecutive games.
Scott Kingery had three hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in, and Kevin Newman added two hits a run scored and a pair of RBI to pace a 13-hit attack for the Wildcats.
JJ Matijevic led off the second inning with his first career home run, sparking what became a four-run frame. After the solo shot to center, the Wildcats strung together four-straight two-out hits, including a two-run double by Kingery and a run-scoring single from Newman.
Arizona (16-4, 1-0 Pac-12) capitalized in two-out situations all evening. Seven of the team's 13 hits came with two outs, including five two-out RBI and another that crossed home on an error.
Cody Hamlin (3-0) gave up five runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five. The righty worked into the eighth inning, when he hit the leadoff batter and turned the game over to Nathan Bannister.
Bannister yielded just one hit and retiring the other six batters he faced in two complete innings.
Utah fell to 4-12 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-12.
The two teams continue the three-game set on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
