Anderson needs to work on rebounding
Ryan Anderson may have scored 27 points, hit seven of 10 three-point shots and led the Magic to victory, but that wasn't good enough for his tough-to-please boss.
Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy looked at the stat sheet and only saw Anderson's two rebounds in 29 minutes.
"He got two rebounds. That's not good enough. That means all you're doing out there is shooting the ball," Van Gundy said. "He's got to be more than just a shooter. I hate to be harping on him, but I know what he's capable of doing."
Anderson, who leads the NBA in both three-pointers made (87) and three-pointers attempted (200), received his official invitation to next weekend's three-point Shootout during All-Star Weekend. He celebrated by having the best shooting night of the season in a 103-87 victory.
Van Gundy believes he should be a better rebounder, more capable of providing defensive help for Dwight Howard around the basket. Anderson may be a candidate for the league's Most Improved Player Award, but Van Gundy thinks he has All-Star potential.
"I don't see what he says as negative," Anderson said. "I want someone to push me to get better. I want to be a more complete player, so he's probably right. I should do a lot better than two rebounds."
Anderson has become the leading shooter on the league's most prolific three-point shooting team. The Magic are headed toward their third consecutive season of leading the NBA in both attempts and makes from the three-point line.
Jason Richardson made four of five. Jameer Nelson made the only one he took. The Magic made 15 of 25 (60 percent) from outside the arc.
"When we get this kind of balance, we're a tough team to guard," Anderson said. "All eyes are on Dwight (Howard) inside, so there are a lot of open shots.
