ACC basketball capsules: Thursday outlook
Thursday, March 1
Florida State (19-9, 10-4) at Virginia (21-7, 8-6)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Charlottesville, VA, John Paul Jones Arena (14,100)
Fast break: Both teams should be safe regarding getting into the NCAA Tournament, but to play it safe, Virginia could use a victory. Obviously, Mike Scott needs to score, but he needs help on the perimeter, too. FSU should win the battle on the glass, and if it can dominate it has a great chance of ending a two-game losing skid. Key matchup might be at the point, here Jontel Evans has played well of late, and he can get the better of Luke Louchs, UVa’s prospects are pretty good.
Forecast: Virginia, 57-54.
Virginia Tech (15-14, 4-10) at Clemson (15-13, 7-7)
When: 9 p.m.
Where: Clemson, S.C., Littlejohn Coliseum (11,000)
Fast break: The NIT remains a possibility for both clubs, especially Clemson. And given the youth on the Hokies and Tigers, they could use extra games and practices. Tech continues to battle despite losing close game after close game, but the Tigers are playing better overall ball. And being at home, Tanner Smith and company have the edge.
Forecast: Clemson, 66-61.
Andrew Jones’ record: 197-48
