Tina Weirather fastest in World Cup downhill training

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein has set the fastest time in the only training run for a women's World Cup downhill, while Daniela Merighetti of Italy has crashed and broken a leg.

The International Skiing Federation says on Friday that Merighetti will have surgery in Garmisch. It gave no other details.

Weirather was .56 seconds faster than overall World Cup leader Tina Maze of Slovenia. Regina Sterz of Austria was .76 seconds behind in third.

Anna Fenninger of Austria, winner of back-to-back races last weekend in Bulgaria, was fourth.

Downhill World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn of the United States was seventh, 1:18 back.

Vonn says she feels she is ''in a good place now ... I know I can definitely ski to win if I avoid mistakes (I made today).''

The race is on Saturday.
