Thailand soccer may be DQed from 2012 Olympics
Thailand could be disqualified from the 2012 London Olympic qualifying tournament for reportedly fielding an ineligible player in a match against Palestine.
FIFA says it is investigating the case but has not decided if Thailand broke rules, which could allow Palestine to advance instead.
Thailand eliminated Palestine on penalties in March after a second-leg match in the West Bank. It was the first competitive international match played in Palestinian.
However, FIFA is studying whether Thailand midfielder Sucharit Chanthakul should have served a suspension when he played in the first leg.
Thailand is scheduled to play Bahrain in a two-leg series on June 19 and 23 in the second round of Asian qualifying.
Abdel Majid Haja, general secretary of the Palestinian Football Union, told The Associated Press that it had received confirmation that it would play Bahrain in June.
''We received an official letter from FIFA and the Asian football union that Thailand is disqualified due to using a player who is over age'' Haja said. ''Therefore, Thailand lost the match and now Palestine is back in the competition.''
