Sao Paulo confirmed as football host in 2016 Rio Olympics
Olympic organizers have confirmed Sao Paulo as one of the host cities of the football tournament at the 2016 Rio Games.
The announcement comes after a meeting between the local organizing committee and city officials Thursday.
South America's biggest city was pre-selected as one of the six hosts, but local officials were yet to guarantee the city's participation because of the high costs involved.
With Sao Paulo confirmed, Olympic organizers decided to extend the deadline for fans to apply for tickets, saying they were ''given an extra six days to complete their application.''
The original deadline was to end Thursday.
In addition to Rio, the other Brazilian cities hosting the football tournament will be Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Salvador and Manaus. All of which hosted World Cup matches.
