World champion Eric Frenzel of Germany won the season-opening Nordic Combined World Cup event on Saturday, beating Joergen Graabak of Norway by 3.5 seconds.

Frenzel won the overall World Cup last season and seems to have maintained his form going into the new campaign, showing right away why he is one of the big favorites ahead of the Sochi Olympics. The German was fourth after the ski jump competition and finished the 10-kilometer cross-country race in 28 minutes 34.9 seconds.

Graabak was second and Magnus Krog of Norway was third, 6.9 seconds behind.

The results from Friday's provisional ski jump was used to determine the start list for the cross-country race after strong winds cancelled Saturday's jump.
