A Dutch sports commission has decided that a speedskater or her coach offered a Polish skater money for her starting spot in the 5,000-meter race at the 2006 Turin Olympics.

The commission announced Thursday it had proof that Katarzyna Wojcicka was offered $62,000 to withdraw so Dutch skater Gretha Smit could compete.

The commission report said Smit gave Wojcicka a letter mentioning $62,000, and that her coach, Ingrid Paul, had verbally mentioned a similar amount.

Wojcicka turned down the offer. Smit was the first alternate in the race and could only compete if one of the 16 other skaters dropped out.

Smit has denied involvement, and Paul denied any attempt at bribery.

The commission says sanctions will be announced in a few months.
