Teemu Selanne, Nationals' Harper congratulate Ovechkin
Former NHLer Teemu Selanne and Washington Nationals star outfielder Bryce Harper were quick to offer their well wishes toward Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who became the 43rd member of the 500-goal club on Sunday.
Selanne knows a thing or two about scoring a goal -- or 684, for that matter. The legendary Finn had nothing but praise for his fellow No. 8.
"Score No. 8. Well done. Five hundred goals in the NHL. Welcome to the club and keep it going. Many, many to come."
Selanne was not alone as Harper took to Twitter while the Capitals were still on the ice playing against the Ottawa Senators.
Ovechkin became the fifth fastest NHL player to reach the milestone when he scored the first of his two goals on Sunday. Wayne Gretzky (575 games), Mario Lemieux (605), Mike Bossy (647) and Brett Hull (693) were the only four who joined the 500-goal club at a quicker pace.
A three-time Hart Trophy winner, Ovechkin has scored five of his league-leading 26 goals in the last four days. For his efforts, the 30-year-old Russian was named the NHL's First Star of the Week on Monday.
Ovechkin's 501 goals reside 42nd on the all-time list, one shy of Joe Mullen and two behind former Capital Peter Bondra. Selected with the top overall pick of the 2004 draft, Ovechkin also has 433 assists while playing in 801 career games.
