Dallas Stars F Patrick Sharp left Thursday night’s game with a concussion.  Head coach Lindy Ruff said he expects the winger to be out “a while”

Dallas Stars F Patrick Sharp is sidelined with concussion-like symptoms after leaving Thursday night’s game. The 34-year-old winger is expected to miss the team’s next matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, Oct. 22, and looks to be out indefinitely.

Sharp exited the Stars’ game against the Los Angeles Kings in the second period after taking a rough hit from Kings defenseman Brayden McNabb. After the hit, Sharp left to the locker room for concussion testing and did not return.

Two Stars Down Against Kings

The Stars and the Kings faced off in a very physical match that resulted in  a Kings’ 4-3 OT won. The game sent two forwards off the ice, including Sharp.

Patrick Eaves, right winger, also mid-game. Eaves suffered a lower-body injury and exited before the game’s third period. The two injuries leave uncertainty about Dallas’ future lineups.

Coach Lindy Ruff has confirmed that Sharp will miss the team’s next matchup on Saturday. Though Eaves didn’t participate in practice Friday, his play status is still uncertain.

Though neither of the newly sidelined players has notched a goal this season their potential absence will cause waves through the lineups. Ruff has not yet specified whether or not the team will make a call up from the AHL.

Without Patrick Sharp

While Sharp hasn’t yet had his first goal of the season, the forward has a knack for scoring. Sharp posted 20 goals and 35 assists last season for the Stars and was fourth on the team in scoring.

Sharp was a big producer for the Stars last season because of his ability to score and make plays. Sharp’s talents worked for the Stars, especially on the same team as F Jamie Benn and F Jason Spezza.

Without Sharp in the lineup, the Stars will need players to step up to make places and move the puck. Dallas’ abundance of talent will help then through but no team is every prepared to lose a player to a possible concussion.

The most difficult circumstance surrounding Sharp’s injury is the uncertainty behind his symptoms. Sharp’s possible timetable for his return and the severity of his symptoms is still unknown.

    Going Forward

While the specifications of Sharp’s injury have not been released, he has been experiencing concussion-like symptoms. Sharp will definitely miss the next while it seems, and it is unknown as to when he might return.

Many are hoping that Sharp’s symptoms quickly subside. After news of Pittsburgh Penguins‘ captain Sidney Crosby‘s concussion, many have again realized the possible severity of concussions.

Further details of Sharps injury should come to light soon. Until then, the Dallas Stars will take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, Oct.22 at 8 p.m. on home ice.
