Bob Essensa has been the Boston Bruins’ goaltending coach since 2003, so he’s no stranger to dishing advice to B’s netminders. Yet when Tuukka Rask left Saturday’s game against the New York Rangers just 10 seconds into the second period, backup Niklas Svedberg was forced into action.
The problem? Boston didn’t have a backup for Svedberg should he be forced to leave as well. Enter Essensa.

The Toronto native played 14 seasons in the NHL from 1989 to 2002, so he’s no slouch. Then again, he’s 50 years old, so we’d imagine he’d have to do plenty of extra stretching before hitting the ice.
Fortunately, Essensa’s services weren’t needed, as Svedberg stopped 16 of 18 shots in the Bruins’ 4-2 win. Head coach Claude Julien also expects Rask to be ready for Sunday’s contest against the Carolina Hurricanes, but at least Essensa has a cool story to tell the kids.
