The New England Patriots acquired defensive end Akiem Hicks from the New Orleans Saints last week, adding more depth to the team's defensive line. Hicks isn't a Pro Bowler or a big name player, but he's certainly capable of making an impact in New England.

Hicks says one of his best traits is his discipline, and he credits it to his father who was in the Army.

"Coming into this new scheme, I think one my traits that I carry with me wherever I go is discipline," Hicks said via MassLive. "My dad was in the military for 22 years so it's just something I believe in. So I've definitely been dedicated and working hard toward scheme and being able to be a help to this defense."

Hicks has 6.5 sacks and is in his fourth year in the league, but he had plans other than football when he was younger: He considered joining the military.

"Definitely," he said. "It was a huge thought on my mind until I became good at football."

Hicks will likely make his Patriots debut on Sunday after joining the team during the bye week, and he's ready to hit the ground running.

"This is my first time playing for a new team since I've been in the NFL so it's definitely a transition period and I'm learning as fast as I can," he said.
