Falcons' Quinn says injured WR Jones expected back 'shortly'

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:54 a.m. ET

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) Falcons coach Dan Quinn updated star receiver Julio Jones' injury as a sprained toe instead of turf toe on Wednesday, putting a more optimistic outlook on the injury.

Jones missed Wednesday's practice after being held out of last week's 42-14 win over the Rams. The update reflects the team's optimism that Jones, who leads the NFL in yards receiving, is not facing an extended absence.

Jones' status for Sunday's game against San Francisco remains uncertain.

''The good news is a sprained toe is definitely better than turf toe,'' Quinn said Wednesday. ''He can get better faster. ... We'll get him back here shortly.''

Receiver Mohamed Sanu returned to practice after missing last week's game with a groin injury. Another receiver, Nick Williams, remains on concussion protocol.

Sanu is the team's second-leading receiver, and his return is especially important to the team's depth at the position. Williams was signed from the practice squad last week.

''He may be listed as limited but he looked good,'' said Quinn of Sanu.

Also held out with injuries Wednesday were defensive end Adrian Clayborn (knee), cornerback Jalen Collins (knee) and safeties Kemal Ishmael (shoulder) and Robenson Therezie (ankle).

Clayborn, who is second on the team with 4 1/2 sacks, has missed two games after having surgery on his left knee.
