Browns Place Robert Griffin III on IR With Shoulder Injury

After signing former Heisman winner, and second overall pick Robert Griffin III this offseason, the Browns have placed him on the injured reserve after just one start. He fractured his coracoid bone in his left shoulder, but it will not require surgery.

Robert Griffin III is expected to miss, at least, the next eight weeks, and will be eligible to return from the IR once week 10 comes around.

He will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks to determine their next course of action.

In regards to the injury, head coach Hue Jackson had this to say:

“It’s very unfortunate, Robert came in and has worked extremely hard to learn our offense and earn the respect of his teammates.” “This is a tough loss because everyone has seen how invested he has been in this team and his dedication to the work needed to improve his craft. We all know these are the realities of the NFL, injuries occur and you have to find ways to overcome them so they don’t impede your progress.’

Griffin had ups and downs in yesterday’s 29-10 loss against the Eagles before suffering the injury in a collision with rookie Jalen Mills on the sideline in the fourth quarter. His non-throwing shoulder was exposed as he tried to fight for yards as he attempted to go out of bounds.

Griffin finished the day completing 12 of 26 passes for 190 yards and an interception with 37 rushing yards on five carries. He did return to the game despite the injury, but mostly handed off to a running back.

Without Griffin starting the Browns will turn to 37-year-old veteran, Josh McCown, to be their signal caller. McCown threw for 2,109 yards and 12 touchdowns as the Browns starter in eight games, and compiling a 1-7 record as the starter before breaking his collarbone. This will also allow rookie Cody Kessler to become the backup barring a surprise signing by the Browns.

This will definitely throw a wrench in Sashi Brown and Hue Jackson’s plans to evaluate Griffin’s ability to be the Browns’ long term solution as the quarterback, which many previously doubted would be the outcome.
