Paul Pierce sinks Hawks with buzzer-beater
By Matt Birch
The Wizards brought Paul Pierce to Washington last summer to help the team close out pivotal games. On Saturday night, he showed why he has been worth every penny of the two-year, $10 million contract he signed last July.
No one expected the Hawks to come back from a 21-point lead in Game 3, but that’s exactly what happened. The Wizards blew the lead and were in desperate need of a big shot in the game’s final seconds to avoid overtime.
Paul Pierce—“The Truth”—had the answer.
Pierce received the ball with under five seconds remaining in the game and it was clear who the Wizards wanted to take the final shot. He then squared his shoulders and attempted one of his patented step-back jumpers. Pierce may not have called bank, but he drained it, giving the Wizards a 103-101 victory.
And he had a great reaction afterwards, too. When asked if he called bank, Pierce said “I called game!"
Pierce finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in the game.
