Sprint Cup Chase drivers will replace names on cars with Twitter handles
NASCAR to use Twitter hashtags to advertise #TheChase beginning this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.
NASCAR and Twitter announced today that the 16 drivers who are competing for the 2016 Sprint Cup championship will have their Twitter handles on the top of their windshields instead of their names for the first three Chase events.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend, the New England 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 25 and the Citizen Soldier 400 at Dover International Speedway on Oct. 2 will be part of an aggressive push by NASCAR to use Twitter, Vine and Periscope to elevate The Chase experience.
When using the hashtag #TheChase, there will be a new, racing-themed Twitter emoji that will bring tweets to life over the final ten weeks of the season.
“Twitter brings the passion and excitement of NASCAR to millions of our fans every single day in very unique and innovative ways,” said NASCAR Managing Director, Social Media, Scott Warfield. “As we embark on The Chase, the platform is helping us make the overall social experience that much richer and more memorable for our fans and followers.”
For the first race at Chicagoland, the infield will display giant stencils of the Twitter bird logo, @NASCAR and #TheChase.
“NASCAR truly embraces Twitter as a bridge between fans and the drivers they love,” said Andrew Barge, Sports Partnerships, Twitter. “During this year’s Chase, with Twitter handles on windshields and hashtags on the infield grass, NASCAR demonstrates just how much it genuinely values and encourages that fan engagement.”
