Dillon to drive in Dover Sprint Cup
Austin Dillon will drive the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet in the Sprint Cup race at Dover International Speedway next weekend.
Dillon piloted the No. 51 for the James Finch-owned team at Las Vegas and Texas Motor Speedway earlier this year. Finch is 16th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup owner points with a variety of racers sharing the driving duties.
Regan Smith will compete in the No. 51 Chevrolet on Sunday in the Coca-Cola 600. He starts 36th. With Smith leading the NNS point standings, he’s attempting to scale back on Cup racing and concentrate on the Nationwide title run.
AJ Allmendinger was originally slated for the Dover race. Allmendinger, who starts fifth in Sunday's Indianapolis 500, was enlisted by his IndyCar team owner Roger Penske to race at Belle Isle next weekend.
Dillon, 23, who competes full-time in the Nationwide Series, has five career Sprint Cup starts. His best finish was 21st at Las Vegas in March. In 2011, Dillon won the Camping World Truck Series title. Last year, he finished third in the Nationwide Series after sweeping both races at Kentucky Speedway from the pole. On Saturday, Dillon started from the pole in the History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway but finished 14th. He is seventh in the Nationwide Series point standings.
