Panther Racing crew member Eric Scheumann has had surgery to repair fractures in his tibia and fibula and hopes to return home later this week.

Scheumann was injured during a pit road accident during Sunday's race at Kentucky Speedway. He had surgery at the Chandler Medical Center on the campus of the University of Kentucky, the team said in a news release issued Monday night.

A full-time firefighter and EMT in Las Vegas, Scheumann joined the Panther team just before September's race at Japan.

He was diagnosed with multiple fractures to his tibia in addition to the fractured fibula in his left leg.

Scheumann changed the inside rear tire on JR Hildebrand's car and has worked as a mechanic on both cars Panther has run this season.
