BK Racing adds third car for Kvapil

Published May. 10, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Travis Kvapil will have an opportunity to race in the Southern 500, after all.

Kvapil, who has been driving the No. 93 BK Racing Toyota since the second race of the season at Phoenix, was expected to be sidelined this weekend as David Reutimann reprises his role in the car he drove in the season-opening Daytona 500.

However, the owners of BK Racing have decided to field a third car at Darlington Raceway, putting Kvapil in the No. 73 Dr. Pepper Toyota. Veteran crew chief Ben Leslie will oversee the team.

Kvapil is 32rd in driver points after two engine failures this season. He finished a season-best 16th last weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. The No. 93 car is 35th in owner points.

Reutimann, who is sharing driving duties with Danica Patrick in the No. 10 Chevrolet for Tommy Baldwin Racing, finished 26th behind the wheel of the No. 93 Toyota at Daytona. Reutimann is 31st in driver points.

VOICES CARRY

Danica Patrick will test out a new spotter in the Southern 500 this weekend — Tab Boyd.

Boyd spotted for Juan Pablo Montoya the past few seasons but was replaced on the stand by Jeff Dickerson at the start of the season.

Patrick has tried out a variety of voices in NASCAR.

T.J. Majors, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s spotter, works with Patrick in the Nationwide Series except in events in which Junior competes. On the Sprint Cup side, Patrick tried Mark Robertson without much success. Former truck standout Rick Carelli spotted for Patrick in several Nationwide races, most recently last weekend at Talladega. However, Carelli’s full-time Cup gig is with driver Regan Smith.
