New Volkswagen Microbus in the works
Are you ready to get back on the bus?
Volkswagen will unveil a 21st century version of its iconic Microbus camper van at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, Autocar reports.
The setting is appropriate as the new small van will be available as an all-electric model that sources say will have a range of at least 250 miles per charge. Gasoline and diesel-powered versions will also be offered.
Sources tell Autocar that VW will introduce the vehicle as a concept at CES before confirming its production for 2017.
VW has been toying with a Microbus revival since at least 2001. That year, it revealed a concept at the Detroit Auto Show that was originally set to go on sale in 2003, but never came to fruition. A second, smaller concept called the Bulli debuted in 2011, but never made it into showrooms, either.
While it’s not yet clear if either of those will form the template for the latest version, VW’s development chief says it will be boxy, with a short front end and thick rear roof pillar, just like the original.
Officially known as the Type 2, the Microbus was produced in various locations for 63 years that ended in Brazil in 2013. The new version will be manufactured in Puebla, Mexico, alongside the company’s other heritage model, the Beetle.
