Formula One: Mercedes is still ahead, says Vettel
Sebastian Vettel says that Mercedes has a clear advantage on the field heading into Melbourne, but the former World Champion is pleased with the way testing has unfolded for Ferrari.
Vettel believes that the Italian team is in the mix behind Mercedes, along with Williams and RBR.
“Largely it went according to plan,” he said in Barcelona. “The last three days were very good, we did a lot of laps, which is good for reliability, but we still have to improve on that side. And performance-wise we know that Mercedes are the ones to beat, and that's where we want to get, but we have to go step-by-step, and most of all look at ourselves.
“In two weeks we will know a little bit more, I think. It's clear that Mercedes is in front, after that there seems to be a bit of a gap, then it's a lot closer with many teams. It's difficult to say who is right behind, but I think it's probably very close between Williams, Red Bull and ourselves. That's at least how it looks.”
Asked to predict the top six on the grid in Australia he said: “The first two is easy, unless they have some issues, two Mercedes, unfortunately. Then I hope two Ferraris, and then I don't care!”
