It is easy to forget the Max Verstappen is a rookie in Formula One and, though he suffered from a couple of spins during Friday’s practice for the Brazilian GP, he’s already having a far better time than his father Jos did during his F1 debut at the Interlagos circuit in 1994.

Martin Brundle was running in seventh position on Lap 35 when his McLaren began to coast on the long run down to Turn 4.

Not far behind Brundle, Eric Bernard was running a lap down in his Ligier, being followed closely by the Jordan of Eddie Irvine and the Benetton of Jos Verstappen in a hot battle for eighth position.

Irvine made a move to the left as the duo approached Bernard’s Ligier, who was already halfway across the track trying go around Brundle.

With Verstappen to Irvine’s left, the Dutch rookie was forced onto the grass, causing him to lose control of his Benetton and slide across the path of the other three drivers. The dramatic incident that followed saw Verstappen’s right rear wheel hit Brundle’s helmet, but everyone involved was ultimately OK.

Irvine was given a one-ran ban for the collision, which the Jordan team appealed. However, the team lost the appeal and the ban was extended to three races.
