F1: Raikkonen mystified by loss of control in Austria crash
The FIA stewards took no action against Kimi Raikkonen or Fernando Alonso after their spectacular crash on the first lap in Austria - although the Finn has accepted that he triggered it.
Raikkonen said he lost control when he experienced wheelspin, even though he was already some way out of Turn Two. Alonso was seemingly left with nowhere to go.
“It was a very strange incident because he lost the car in fifth gear or something like that,” said Alonso. “I was braking, but my wheels were in the air! Luckily we are both fine. I was in the wrong place.”
“I had some wheelspin and then suddenly I went left,” said Raikkonen. “Obviously it is not normal, but it happened.
“We don't know exactly the reason, but something obviously happened. I don't know, was it me or was it something else? I don't know.”
Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene said there was no obvious technical reason for Kimi's loss of control.
“Honestly I don't think so, and on top there are no images on the camera of Alonso,” he said. “We have to trust Kimi. He said that the car got wheelspin, and that's it. Apparently if you listen to what Kimi said, Alonso didn't touch him.
“Looking at the end of the images, because the beginning of the images nobody has, I thought Alonso was touching Kimi, but apparently it's not true. Listening to Kimi, Alonso doesn't have any responsibility, apparently.”
