F1: Massa questions Verstappen's experience after Monaco crash

Felipe Massa has questioned Max Verstappen's level of experience after the Dutchman had a heavy crash in the Monaco GP.

Verstappen hit the back of Romain Grosjean's Lotus and was launched into the barrier at Ste Devote. He subsequently received a five-place grid penalty for Canada, and two penalty points.

Massa, whose race was spoiled by first lap contact with Nico Hulkenberg, believes that the FIA Stewards should take a closer look at such incidents.

“I think they just need to analyze it a bit better, what has happened,” he said. “What has happened with me on the first lap, but also I would say what for me was pretty dangerous was the accident with Verstappen. He is supposed to get a penalty for what he did; he just braked behind much later and what happened was very dangerous.

“It shows that maybe experience counts in F1, and I think to teach this type of accident they need to control better, because it was very dangerous so it was lucky that he was not hurt because he could have been very hurt with what happened. To be honest, he was not in the position to overtake, he was not even near to go inside, he was behind, so to be honest, it was too much what happened.”

Expanding on the age question he said: “I think it was very dangerous for him to be honest, because he is 17, if he is hurt then everybody will talk about. 'Why did they give the license to a guy who is 17 and he is doing that?' But he is not hurt, and everybody is happy. They need to do things in a better way.”

Until the crash, Verstappen had not been involved in any controversial incidents with other drivers.
