Padres catcher Norris not expected to miss time after taking pitch on wrist

The San Diego Padres held their breath this weekend as they waited for the X-ray results on Derek Norris' left wrist after he took a pitch on his wrist while catching in the Padres' 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

They let out a big exhale when they were informed that the X-rays on Norris' wrist turned out negative.

"He's sore and swollen, as you would expect it to be 12-to-14 hours later," Padres assistant general manager Fred Uhlman Jr said.

Rookie Austin Hedges started in Norris' absence on Sunday, but the Padres are hopeful that the 26-year-old catcher will be able to return to the team on Tuesday after a day of rest during the team's off-day on Monday.

"You don't want to lose a guy so [important] to your pitching plans," interim manager Pat Murphy said. "We're thankful we have a guy like Hedges behind him. Hopefully Derek is available today if needed. If not, with the off-day, the swelling will go down and he'll be available Tuesday."

While his on-base percentage (.290) is low and his strikeout total (105 strikeouts in 415 at-bats) is high, Norris has been a steady offensive producer for the Padres this season, bopping 13 home runs with 54 RBI through 113 games.
