Fractured wrist could end season for Phillies rookie Franco

Philadelphia Phillies rookie third baseman Maikel Franco chould be done for the season due to a small fracture in his left wrist.

Franco was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after X-rays revealed a small displaced fracture of the wrist sustained when he was hit by a pitch on Aug. 11 in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is expected to wear a splint for two to three weeks, putting the remainder of his season in jeopardy.

"I don’t know whether he’s going to be able to be back by the end of the year or not, but we’re going to be cautious with him," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We have to be as cautious as we can, he’s too important to us. We’ll see how he progresses."

The 22-year-old Franco is batting .277 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs in 77 games since he was called up from the minors in mid-May. The Phillies called up outfielder Aaron Altherr from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
