Rickie Fowler zings golfers who voted him most overrated player
By Steve DelVecchio
Rickie Fowler caught fire on the back nine at The Players Championship on Sunday, and his dominating play down the stretch resulted in a dramatic win in a three-person playoff. You know, the same Rickie Fowler who was recently voted the most overrated player on the PGA Tour by a collection of his peers.
Fowler’s win at the Players was only his second victory on the Tour. It was likely his sweetest, which he seemed to allude to afterward.
“I laughed at the poll,” Fowler told reporters. “But, yeah, if there was any question, I think this right here answers everything you need to know.”
Despite finishing in the top five in every major tournament last year, Fowler has a reputation for blowing it down the stretch. Perhaps the most infamous example of that was when he hit two brutal shots in the water to bury himself at Bay Hill two years ago.
But on Sunday, Fowler proved he is not terrified of pressure when he owned the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, which is arguably the most intimidating hole in the country. He then embraced his model girlfriend and walked away with one of the most coveted trophies in golf.
Being slapped with the “overrated” label may have been exactly what Fowler needed.
