Jordan Spieth was poised to become the first golfer to win back-to-back, wire-to-wire Masters championships, but a disastrous series of three holes derailed Spieth's round.

Standing on the tee at the 10th hole, Spieth had birdied four consecutive holes and held a five shot lead on the field, but consecutive bogeys on 10 and 11 and an unconceivable meltdown at the par-3 12th may have cost Spieth a second green jacket.

Spieth tried to hit an aggressive shot at the 12th, which had a front right hole location just a few paces away from a water hazard - but his tee shot came up short, and Spieth was forced to take a drop.

Hitting his third shot from the fairway, Spieth barely even made it to the hazard. Nick Faldo quipped on the broadcast that Spieth had "never hit one that fat in his life," and his ball never had a chance to reach the green. After another drop, Spieth blasted it over the green and into the bunker, and was able to get up and down for a quadruple-bogey seven

The seven dropped him to 1-under for the tournament, and Spieth suddenly trailed Danny Willett, Lee Westwood and Dustin Johnson. Immediately after Spieth played the 12th, Willett hit his tee shot at No. 16 to 12 feet and made birdie.

Spieth didn't give up, though. He immediately responded with a birdie on 13, and took advantage of the par-5 15th with another birdie to pull within to shots of Willett.
