16-year-old hits 40-foot putt on final hole to win U.S. Women's Amateur
Remember the names Eun Jeong Seong and Virginia Elena Carta. Two of the best amateur women's golfers in the world played a 36-hole classic in the final of the U.S. Women's Amateur Sunday, and the 16-year-old from South Korea prevailed 1-up, capping her win with a 40-foot birdie putt on the final green.
Seong won her second consecutive U.S. Girls' Junior in July, and made history by becoming the first player in history to win both the Girls' Junior and the U.S. Women's Amateur in the same year. Carta, who plays collegiately for Duke, was trying to become the first to win the NCAA individual title and the Amateur in the same year, and led for much of the opening 18 holes. Seong went on a run of five birdies in eight holes to take control and held on to win.
