Washington DE Joe Mathis out for season with foot injury

SEATTLE (AP) Washington defensive end Joe Mathis will miss the rest of the season after determining surgery was the best way to repair a foot injury suffered a few weeks ago by one of the sack leaders for the fourth-ranked Huskies.

Washington coach Chris Petersen announced Mathis' surgery Monday. Mathis had been undergoing rehab for the injury but the determination was made late last week for Mathis to have surgery. Petersen did not disclose the exact injury, but the surgery will end Mathis' college career.

Mathis has missed the past three games and Petersen said there was a slight chance he could play in a postseason game by continuing with the rehab but surgery was the best long-term solution.

Mathis is tied for the team lead with 7+ sacks. Conner O'Brien will continue to start in Mathis' place.
