Top 25: Tennessee Vols Ranked No. 9 in Coaches Poll and AP Poll After Week 5 of the College Football Season
The Tennessee Volunteers moved back into the Top 10 of the AP and Coaches Top 25 rankings after Week Five of the college football season.
You would think that starting the year 5-0 would be enough to move you above your preseason ranking. But for the Tennessee Vols, the 5-0 start simply got them back to where they began in the Top 25.
How the heck does that make sense?
The Vols came in at No. 9 in the Amway Coaches Poll, moving up just two spots after their second straight victory over a team that was ranked when they beat them. After starting the season at No. 10, that’s not a lot of love.
Heck, the Louisville Cardinals, who just lost, are still ahead of the Vols. Sure, they lost to the Clemson Tigers, But it’s not like Tennessee moved to 5-0 with a weak schedule. Three of the teams they beat could be in the Top 25, and the Appalachian State Mountaineers will likely win their conference.
But somehow, because the Vols are winning close games, the voters are over-reacting.

Meanwhile, the Vols rose to No. 9 in the AP Poll as well. That’e exactly where they began the season in that poll. Louisville is ahead of them in that poll as well.
So congratulations Tennessee. You begin the year 5-0 with two wins over ranked teams, and all it does is gets you back to where you began the season in the Top 25.
The Texas A&M Aggies, who the Vols play this week, are No. 7 in the Coaches Poll and No. 8 in the AP Poll.
The good news is with the Aggies and No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide up over next two weeks, the Vols are in complete control of their own destiny to prove everybody wrong here.
