Four white football players recruited by Savannah State University's former coach say in a lawsuit the historically black college denied them scholarships because of their race.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta says coach Robby Wells offered scholarships to the players before he was fired in January. It says Savannah State pulled the scholarship offers after Wells left.
Savannah State's attorney, Joe Steffen, says the school has no record of scholarship offers to any of the players. He says the coach had no authority to give scholarships without approval from the university athletics director.
Wells, who was Savannah State's first white football coach, filed his own discrimination lawsuit in May.
