Patterson on Turpin: 'One of the most exciting guys we've ever had'
The Texas defense couldn't catch KaVontae Turpin last week. And Texas' coaches never even tried to reel him in last year when the freshman out of Monroe, La., was open to offers from any major program.
Thing is, TCU was about the only major program to smile at the undersized receiver, who played awfully big last week in scoring four touchdowns against the Longhorns while racking up 138 yards on six receptions.
TCU coach Gary Patterson is not one for hyperbole, so when he makes bold statements, they're usually backed by his true feelings. Here's how he described Turpin:
"He was one of the last guys we took in the class,” Patterson told reporters. “And he’s turned out to be one of the most exciting guys we’ve ever had here."

Turpin now has six touchdowns on the season, second behind Josh Doctson, who broke the school's receiving touchdowns record last week.
The 5-foot-9 Turpin is listed at under 160 pounds. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in speed and agility. He showed the Longhorns what straightaway speed is all about as blew by the entire defense on a 49-yard sprint for a touchdown. He also had a 50-yard touchdown in which a highlight-reel-level juke along the sideline sprung him free.
He's exactly what the Frogs have needed with Kolby Listenbee out of the lineup the last two weeks, Emanuel Porter out last week and Ty Slanina lost for the season.
"Turp’s got the juice right now,” quarterback Trevone Boykin told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He’s just so fast and quick and twitchy. You just really try to get that guy the ball in open space and watch him make moves.”
