Ole Miss Football: Report Card vs Florida State
Ole Miss football lost to Florida State 45-34. Here is how each side of the team played on Monday and what needs to be fixed.
Here is how the Ole Miss football team graded out after losing to Florida State on Monday night.
Offense
, Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss offense started the game off strong. After marching down the field on the first drive, the Rebels continued to score at will in the first half, taking a 28-13 lead into the half. But after that, the offense was a non-factor. Kelly was making some horrible reads and some questionable throws, as well as getting pressured like crazy in the pocket.
If the line can give Kelly some time in the pocket, he can have a nice season, but right now, that is looking grim. The line is young and inexperienced. They got overwhelmed by the speed on the field tonight.
The offense should show out against Wofford, as one would hope, but then the Rebels get Alabama. Some things need worked on before you can even think of defeating the Tide.
Defense

The defense looked outstanding early on as well, complimenting the early offense. But after the 1 quarter, the defense was starting to struggle. With the injury to Ken Webster knocking him out of the game early, the defense relied on guys like Kalio Moore and Carlos Davis.
The defensive line was getting a push, but the linebackers and defensive backs were struggling, mightily. The defense will have to get improved if the Rebels want to win big time games this season. The defensive backfield especially.
Ole Miss did a great job containing Cook, but Francois lit the team up after the first half. This worries me for the Alabama game, which will feature Jalen Hurts, a quarterback a lot like Francois.
Coaching

The coaching calls made in this game were baffling to me. The 4-2-5 defense is atrocious right now, with the “talent” we have on defense. The whole reason of the 4-2-5 is to hide your non-talent in the linebacker position and help show off the talent in the defensive backfield.
Well, that was great when we had guys like Golson, Elston, Hilton, Prewitt, and a healthy Conner in the backfield. But now it is a banged up group of young guys.
The soft coverage on the secondary’s part is still baffling. Wommack has been running this style defense since last season, and it has killed the team in multiple games.
I know Wommack is scared of his corners getting burned, but one or two burns a game is better than giving up 10 yards a pass.
This needs to be addressed, and soon. I don’t know if a personal change or a coaching change needs to be made, but something does. Maybe bring back Tom Allen?
