N.C. State RB Thornton arrested, dismissed from team after scooter crash
Running back Shadrach Thornton has run out of chances at N.C. State as the school dismissed him from the football team following an arrest on Tuesday night stemming from a scooter accident.
"It's an unfortunate set of circumstances, but we've made the decision to dismiss Shadrach from our program,” said N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said in a statement.
Thornton, 22, was charged with failure to stop and render aid and failure to provide information after he drove into Jimmie Woodard with his scooter and left the scene.
Woodard told WRAL he was waiting for a bus when, "The next thing I know, I see a motor scooter coming my way, and I just got hit. I was aware because I saw the blood on my shirt."
Woodard was not seriously injured, but he did have to get stiches on his face.
"I hold no grudge against him," Woodard told WRAL. "I don't know (Thornton). I know of him now, but I don't know the man, so I hold no grudge."
Woodard claims Thornton did not stop to help him, but Thornton’s attorney, Lee Turner, said his client did have a “conversation” with the victim.
"I understand that he was polite, cooperative and gave the officers a full statement about what happened," Turner told WRAL. "I understand that after the accident he did have a conversation with the victim before leaving the scene."
Local police found Thornton later on in his apartment and arrested him and also gave him a citation for with driving on the sidewalk and operating an unregistered vehicle.
Thornton, who led the Wolfpack in rushing last year, was suspended for the first two games of this season for a violation of athletic department policy. It was his third suspension of his college career, with the first two coming after brushes with the law in 2013.
