Mitchell propels W Carolina to 42-27 win over VMI

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) Troy Mitchell threw a career-high five touchdowns and ran in a sixth from 55 yards out to lead Western Carolina to a 42-27 win over VMI on Saturday.

Mitchell finished with 339 yards and an interception on 32-for-42 passing and added another 109 yards on the ground with 12 carries. Karnorris Benson hauled in four of the touchdown passes and Tyler Sexton grabbed the fifth for the Catamounts (7-4, 5-2 Southern Conference), who secured their first winning season since 2005 with the victory.

Darius Ramsey had 128 yards on 19 carries, while Benson and Terryon Robinson finished with 127 yards apiece on eight and 12 catches, respectively.

The Keydets (2-9, 1-5) were trailing 21-0 in the second quarter before getting their first score, a 9-yard TD run by Deon Watts. Al Cobb led VMI with 321 yards on 19-for-45 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
