Missouri OL McGovern breaks team weight-room record
Last summer, Missouri offensive lineman Connor McGovern partially tore a pectoral muscle while unsuccessfully attempting to set a school record with an absurd 515-pound bench press. Fortunately for the Tigers, McGovern recovered from his injury and started all 14 games for the second straight year, playing both right tackle and right guard.
This year, McGovern is being shifted to left tackle, and with a new position came a new attempt at a weight-room record, this time a successful one. McGovern broke the Missouri school squat record Friday by squatting 690 pounds five times. Yes, 690 pounds. Yes, five times.
McGovern has reported a personal max squat of 785 pounds, which is similarly ridiculous.
It's worth pointing out that, as SEC fan site Saturday Down South has reported, McGovern is the son of a bodybuilder and began lifting in elementary school, which typically isn't recommended.
But it has yielded (at least in this case) some impressive results, as McGovern's teammates and opponents can undoubtedly attest.
