Michigan coach Brady Hoke decided not to allow starting offensive guard Ricky Barnum to be in uniform for the opener.

Barnum, backup running back Stephen Hopkins and reserve linebacker Marell Evans didn't play Saturday against Western Michigan because of a team matter.

Hoke said all three players would be eligible to return to play in the next game against Notre Dame.

Starting linebacker Cam Gordon didn't to play because of a back injury.
