Michigan Football: Why Colorado Could Challenge Wolverines

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Michigan football team has yet to face a challenge this season, could Colorado be the first to offer some real resistance?

The first two weeks of the Michigan football season have been pretty uneventful. The Wolverines cruised to easy victories and outside of some injuries, all is right in Ann Arbor.

This week, the Colorado Buffaloes come calling. Like Michigan, Colorado is 2-0 and coming off two easy victories. Yet, against the fourth-ranked Wolverines, the Buffs are still 20-point underdogs.

We all know those numbers don’t matter. Michigan football should win this game and should win it easily, but as they say, that’s why we play the games.

The truth is, this Colorado team is better than people think. On the defensive side of the ball, they are only giving up 160 yards per game and their 62 pass yards allowed is second in FBS.

Like Michigan, Colorado has a star corner and unlike Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie has been healthy for the Buffs and making an impact with 10 tackles, an interception and two passes defensed in two games.

Colorado does have a strong secondary and also a strong group of linebackers that features Jimmie Gilbert, who has two sacks and Kenneth Olugbode.

The point is, Colorado is tough. The Buffaloes play in a major conference and the talent level of the Wolverines shouldn’t intimidate them.

When Colorado has the ball, Michigan will also have concerns, because CU quarterback Sefo Liufau is not only averaging more than 250 yards passing per game, he also has 120 yards rushing.

Michigan tends to struggle with mobile quarterbacks and Liufau is a strong runner. Phillip Lindsay and Kyle Evans are a good tandem at running back, but Liufau is the key to the offense.

Michigan football is coming off a week, where it averaged 2.9 per rush and with Colorado ranking 30th against the run, the battle will be key.

Wilton Speight will get another chance to show what he can do and even though the Colorado defense is good, it hasn’t seen three pass catchers like Jake Butt, Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh.

And of course, Colorado hasn’t seen anything like the Michigan defense.

Michigan football should still be able to win this game going away, but the Buffaloes could present to match-up problems. And if the Wolverines aren’t on the top of their game, then we all know, anything can happen.
