June Jones is luckiest former coach around for escaping SMU mess
June Jones is the luckiest college football coach on the face of the earth — err, former college football coach.
It has only gotten worse.
After Saturday's 56-0 shellacking against TCU, SMU has been outscored 202-12 in four games.
The Mustangs are a statistician's nightmare . . . or dream.
* They are being outscored by an average of 50.5-3.
* They have rushed for 177 yards in four games, while allowing 1,039 yards to their opponents.
* They are averaging 1.4 yards per attempt, and allowing 6.0 yards per carry.
* While surrendering 291 yards per game through the air, they are managing 163.
* Their lone touchdown this season was via the pass; they have been victimized for 11 scores through the air. Overall, they have allowed 25 TDs to their only score.
* Overall total offense: 2,209 for their foes, 829 for SMU.
* They have 27 kickoff returns, while other teams have a grand total of three returns (there were two touchbacks).
* They have failed to score in the first and third quarter, owning a field goal in the second quarter and nine points in the fourth.
By comparison, the 1989 team, which was playing after the program was scuttled for two years due to the NCAA "death penalty," was 1-3 and had scored 60 ppints.
That team also is known for being hammered by Houston, 95-21, which brings us to SMU's opponent next week, East Carolina.
Another great showing by @SMU_Football Something needs to be done. #Embarrassing

The Pirates will be coming off a bye week. In their last game, they outscored North Carolina, 70-41. East Caroina came into the weekend sixth overall in passing yards and 18th nationally, averaging 43.3 points per game.
