Wisconsin and Minnesota will meet for the 126th time in their storied history as the Badgers look to hold onto Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the 13th straight year.

The Wisconsin Badgers have held onto the Axe for 12 straight games now, looking to make it lucky number 13 when they play host to the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday afternoon. Not only that, Wisconsin is looking to find their way into on of the top four spots of the College Football Playoff.

And because of Nebraska’s blowout loss to Iowa, we now know the Badgers will be on their way to the Big Ten championship game regardless if they beat the Gophers or not. But wouldn’t it be sweeter with the Axe still in their possession after Saturday night?

One matchup everyone needs to keep an eye on is Wisconsin’s running game vs. Minnesota’s rush defense. The Badgers come into the showdown third in the Big Ten averaging 200.7 yards per game on the ground. Corey Clement leads the way with 1,040 yards on the ground (104 yards per game) and 11 touchdowns to lead Wisconsin. But as dominant as Wisconsin has been on the ground, especially as of late, Minnesota has been impressive stopping opposing rushing attacks. The Gophers are third in the conference in rush defense, allowing 116.6 yards per game on the ground.

Clement has rushed for over 100 times five of the last six games, and six times overall this season. In the last five games Clement has also found the end zone a total of six times as well. On the other side of the ball, however, the Gophers defense has been very stingy. They have allowed just one, one-hundred yard rusher on the season and eight rushing touchdowns on the year. In the last six game, the Gophers defense has allowed just three touchdowns on the ground.

Wisconsin found plenty of success on the ground last year against Minnesota. On Saturday, that might not be the case. With plenty on the line, the Badgers need to make sure they keep their focus on the Gophers and not get caught looking ahead.
