Thousands are watching with a sense of subdued somberness as the hearse carrying the body of former football coach Joe Paterno slowly winds its way through the Penn State campus and through State College.
Many were quiet as the electric-blue hearse passed by Wednesday afternoon, followed by Paterno's family in a blue school bus that carried the Nittany Lions to Beaver Stadium on football Saturdays. His widow, Sue, sat in the front seat, the coach's traditional spot.
As the procession went by, the crowd was silent and looked onward. Inside the bus, some of Paterno's grandchildren waved to the crowd.
One man reached out to touch the side of the hearse.
Paterno died Sunday from cancer. He will be buried later Wednesday.
