Gators QB Luke Del Rio Ready To Return Against Missouri
After being on the shelf for three weeks, Luke Del Rio is eager to return to action as the Gators starting quarterback this weekend against Missouri.
It seems longer than three weeks doesn’t it?
That’s because it has been.
Finally, for the first time in four weeks, Luke Del Rio will be back at QB this weekend for the Florida Gators.
Del Rio was supposed to start the LSU game, but of course thanks to the game being postponed, his return had to be delayed a week.
Regardless, Del Rio is ready to get back on the field and hopes the offense will pick up right where they left off before his injury.
“I think the biggest thing is just consistency,” Del Rio said. “We’ve seen that we can play at a really, really high level in both the running game and in the passing game. It starts up front with the offensive line, but we obviously have a big role as quarterbacks; getting us in the right plays, getting us out of bad plays and it’s really just do your job on every play.”
Prior to his injury, Del Rio led the Gators to a 3-0 start, while throwing for 762 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions.
I know you don’t need me to rattle off the numbers for Del Rio’s back up, Austin Appleby, so I’ll spare you that.
But, if you watched the Florida offense in the last six quarters with Appleby under center (only 20 points), you’re probably elated to have Del Rio back.
Now, Del Rio and the offense will turn their attention to the Missouri Tigers.
The Tigers had a bye this past week, but the week before the Mizzou defense gave up 418 rushing yards and 634 total offensive yards to LSU.
The Tigers rank 84th nationally in total defense this fall, surrendering an average of 421 yards per game. They’re 70th in pass defense (232.0 yards per game) and 90th in rush defense. So can the Florida offense that averages 407 yards a game exploit this Tiger defense?
Del Rio thinks so, IF everyone just does what they’re supposed to do on offense.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s going back to really just everybody just doing their job,” he said. “It’s a block here, getting off of a press here — it’s very little things. It’s not like we’re letting eight people loose in the backfield every play. Just do your job on every play and stop worrying about what everybody else is doing and do what you have to do and we’ll be fine.”
It’s Homecoming weekend for the Gators, but will it be a homecoming for the offense when LDR returns under center?
