FSU Football Top Moments of 2016 Season: No. 1
With FSU Football having finished their 2016 regular season, here’s a look at some of the top moments from the first 12 games played this year.
For the Florida State Seminoles, the 2016 campaign was won that had plenty of ups and downs. The great play of several newcomers like quarterback Deondre Francois and cornerback Tarvarus McFadden – along with returning stars like Dalvin Cook and DeMarcus Walker – was offset by injuries to players like Derwin James and Nate Andrews that helped to derail things for FSU football.
While the season did not live up to expectations that started with being a top five ranked team before the opener, it ended on a positive note with a four game winning streak that saw records being broken, the defense playing up to expectations and the Seminoles ending up in a quality bowl game.
But, which were the top moments of the season for the ‘Noles? Here’s a look at one of the top five plays from the 2016 season for Florida State.
No. 1 – The Seminoles block Miami’s attempt at game tying extra point to win seventh in a row
One week before, FSU football once again found themselves dying by a kick – as North Carolina’s 54 yard field goal attempt somehow found a way to be good and give the Tar Heels a shocking win over the ‘Noles, dropping the preseason top five team to 3-2 and heading to South Florida to take on an undefeated ‘Canes team looking to end their long losing streak.
Early on, it looked like the streak would end when Miami jumped out to the 13-3 lead at the half. The next quarter and a half would belong to the Seminoles, who relied on a smothering defense (and a big pick by Tarvarus McFadden) and an offense that got big scores from Dalvin Cook and Kermit Whitfield, to take a 20-13 lead. But, with just a minute and a half left in the game, Miami connected on a touchdown pass and were one point away from possible redemption.

One week before, the ‘Noles had blocked a North Carolina extra point…but that couldn’t happen again, right? Wrong. DeMarcus Walker got his big paw in their and blocked the tying extra point to keep the lead in FSU’s favor. The Seminoles would get the ball and run out the clock on Miami’s chances to get the 20-19 victory.
The win, as we said, was the seventh in a row dating back to Jimbo Fisher’s first season as head coach. That ties the longest win streak over the Hurricanes for FSU football – meaning they currently are tied for the longest streaks against both hated rivals, the ‘Canes and the Florida Gators.
