FSU Football: Top 3 Effects of Malik Henry's Transfer for 2017

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

FSU football is losing on of its top recruits from the last signing class with Malik Henry deciding he will transfer from the program.

With the Orange Bowl less than three weeks away and the focus of FSU football on beating the Michigan Wolverines, the team is now hearing the news they will be without one top recruit from last signing class – as quarterback Malik Henry announced he will transfer from the program.

It has been a rocky few years for the four star recruit, who transferred high schools to IMG Academy in Florida before transferring back to his native California before his senior year. Henry was also suspended for part of the 2016 season due to a violation of team rules and didn’t play in any games this year.

So, what does this decision mean for the quarterback and the Seminoles? Here are the top three effects it will have.

No. 1 – Barring injury or suspension, Deondre Francois will start the 2017 season vs. Alabama

It might sound like the biggest no brainer out there considering what D12 did during the 2016 season after winning the starting job, but you never know what could have taken place if Henry had showed the promise many think he has as a quarterback.

Francois is a beast who showed both skill and toughness during the course of the season – in part due to the survival mode he had to be in at various points. Francois will find himself not just as one of the top quarterbacks in the state or the ACC, but possibly in the entire nation next season.

No. 2 – The ‘Noles need to beef up their quarterback recruiting and makes sure their commitments stay.

With the departure of Henry and the graduation of Sean Maguire, the Seminoles are left with just two quarterbacks on the 2017 roster who have played in a game – well, one and a half quarterbacks considering what J.J. Cosentino looked like in that Peach Bowl loss.

So far, the ‘Noles have two commits for the 2017 signing class – Bailey Hockman and James Blackman – and need to make sure both stay committed to the Seminoles. Don’t be surprised if FSU football makes a push for some graduate transfers that have two years of eligibility to serve as backups.

No. 3 – Henry is going to turn some schools off with his inability to stay committed.

It started in high school, when he transferred from his high school in California to the IMG Academy…only to decide to head back home when faced with adversity and some competition from Shea Patterson, the future starter at Ole Miss.

Odds are, he is going to transfer to a school out west, most like a Pac-12 program losing their quarterback this year. While we wish him the best, any school would be well advised to look at Henry’s track record and make sure he is actually committed to staying at the school longer than 15 minutes.
