FSU Football 2016 Gameday Preview: vs. Charleston Southern
Here’s a preview of FSU football and their next game during the 2016 football season.
For those FSU football fans that are still recovering from the events of Monday night, we completely understand. A majority of the 62,000+ people inside of Camping World Stadium that night (including yours truly) are still coming to grips with the idea that the Seminoles’ historic comeback win over Ole Miss took years off our lives based on what took place.
Unfortunately, the time to recover has come to an end, as FSU will be back on the field Saturday for the home opener. While the quick turnaround may be the bad news, at least the showdown this week will be against the one FCS opponent on the schedule. Charleston Southern is a good team, don’t get me wrong…but they are still FCS.
Here’s our preview of this week’s game between the Seminoles and the Buccaneers.

Last Time FSU Football Took The Field
It was a game that will go down in the record books as the greatest comeback win in the history of FSU football. Down 28-6 with just over a minute to go in the second quarter, the Seminoles went on to outscore the Rebels the rest of the game by a combined 39-6 en route to the 11 point win for FSU’s seventh straight season opening victory.
If there was a tale of two halves, it was this game. Deondre Francois got the first start of his career and looked every bit of a redshirt freshman in the first half to go along with the defense looking like Swiss cheese and Dalvin Cook fumbling the ball when he was going in for a touchdown.
The second 30 minutes were a different story as D12 calmed down and ended up with almost 480 total yards (including 419 in the air), while the defense had four turnovers on the night (and DeMarcus Walker had 4.5 sacks) while Cook finished with 91 yards rushing and 101 receiving (a part of his game that had been criticized). Needless to say, FSU fans will take the second half performance over the first if it’s their choice.

Key Matchup
Charleston Southern Offense vs. FSU’s Newcomers
The Buccaneers were one of the first teams to play a game this season, when they traveled to North Dakota State and took the five-time defending FCS champions to overtime on their own turf before losing the game. Last weekend, CSU got their first win of the year when they hammered Eastern Kentucky at home by 50 points.
While this likely won’t be the cupcake game that you would expect when you see the No. 3 ranked FBS team taking on a FCS foe, the Seminoles should win this game comfortably. If that is the case, you will get to see plenty of snaps from the youngsters on the team, including five star defensive back Levonta Taylor and defensive end Brian Burns to name a few.
It’s important to get the youngsters as much time in game situations – especially with an increasingly difficult game the following week against Louisville.

Interesting Note
It will be déjà vu all over again when the Seminoles host their friends from the South Carolina coast. It will be five years ago to the day on Saturday that the two teams met in their only other battle on the football field. On that day, September 10th, 2011, FSU football dominated from start to finish for the 62-10 win.
The Buccaneers finished that season 0-11. Last season, they were 10-3 and one of the final eight teams left standing in the FCS playoffs, so we’ll go out on a limb and say this is a much better team FSU will be facing.

Prediction
It would be wrong for anyone involved with the FSU football program – players, coaches and even fans – to get cocky about this week’s game coming off what took place in Orlando. Yes, the Seminoles are the better team and should win comfortably without breaking a sweat…that is true.
But let’s go back to the 2009 season when FSU was within moments of losing to FCS foe Jacksonville State…or the 2005 season when the Seminoles were in a dogfight with The Citadel. Both those games were at home after a Labor Day night game just five days before. The goal of this game is simple: get in, get a comfortable and convincing lead, get the starters out and get the young guys some playing time before taking on Louisville the following weekend on the road.
