Former Wolverines Gardner, Gordon among Patriots cuts

If Devin Gardner is going to get a shot in the NFL, it apparently will not be with the defending Super Bowl champs.

The record-setting Michigan quarterback who endured and up-and-down final two years as the Wolverines starter was released by the New England Patriots on Monday.

The move leaves the Patriots with three quarterbacks on the roster, although Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady is suspended for the first four games of the regular season pending an appeal. The other two are inexperienced Jimmy Garoppolo and Garrett Gilbert.

While Gardner's inconsistency in 2013 and '14 certainly called into question his ability to make it as an NFL quarterback, he has always been regarded as a talented player with good raw tools.

Former Wolverine Cam Gordon was also among the Pats' cuts Monday.
